I did actually solve this issue about a year ago, just didn't post the final solution here.

I used the DNNFilePicker control to select the file, then an ASHX extension to upload the file to the server asynchronously, works great with no postback.
AFAIR I also wanted to send parameters with the image and to have a callback to post a success/failure message and update the UI all of which the ASHX extension allows.
