Hi,

I've been looking at the options for creating so called responsive skins. For anyone not aware of what a responsive skin is, it's a skin that adapts it's look to the size of device being used. i.e. A conventional layout on a desktop/tablet and a collapsed version skin for mobile devices.

Apart from buying in a hand crafted skin, I've just discovered that the next version of Artisteer (4.0) allows the creation of responsive skins. For anyone not aware of Artisteer, it's a web design tool which allows you to create website templates including skins for DNN.

The next version is at the release candidate stage at the time of writing and is available here: http://www.artisteer.com/?p=news
There is a trial version, which allows you to create skins but you'll need to buy a license to to save your projects.

In Artisteer 4.0, skins are responsive by default, but you can enable/disable that under: Options -> General -> Responsive Web Design. Also by default, the top level menu only is displayed when sized for a mobile device, but you can change that under: Menu -> Levels -> Options -> Responsive levels.

I hope someone will find this tip useful.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,Thanks a lot for sharing that with the community. I'm sure that more people will find it very useful. I have never used Artisteer, but I hear a lot about it. If you can tell us a bit more about it, how useful it is? Are the skins design ans general quality in general good? Thanks,Aderson

I've played around with Artisteer quite a bit, and you can create quite nice looking skins with no html/css knowledge.

There are a load of sample templates on their site here: http://www.artisteer.com/?p=free_website_templates But these are not responsive, but I assume I can open them in the new version of Artisteer and it will convert them, I did this already with a skin I created from scratch.

The problem is, I think, for non-skin designers such as myself, that you can spend absolutely ages trying to create the perfect skin. I don't know whether I would overcome that in time, but there are so many settings to play about with. Maybe modifying a template is a better approach rather that creating a design from scratch.

There are limitations of course. I wanted to put the logo and subtext above the header image. But there's no built-in way to do that in Artisteer. The sites combine the logo and sub text with the header image. The only work around is to create a header image with a white border at the top.

I found Artisteer support to be very good, I usually get a very quick (a few hours) response.

Regards,

Steve
