Hi Aderson,

Thank you for the reply and explanation. I understand the reason for a 301 redirect, but it should surely apply to the old URL(s), shouldn't it?

The new URL should have a status of 200. So I don't understand why changing the page url more than once causes the 'page redirected too many times' error.

Also, it isn't clear from the UI that multiple redirects will occur, or at least wasn't clear to me, I only discovered it occurring when the browsers objected.

There is also a 'do not redirect' option, I haven't tried it but if it accepts the URL given in the page URL and doesn't cause

a redirect that would be a better option than deleting entries in the TabUrls table.

I would like to spend more time playing around with this, but just don't have the time to spend at the moment.

By the way, Google's Matt Cutts suggests 4 or 5 is the limit for the Google search bot:
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/93633?hl=en

But that seems to conflict with what the browsers allow, just two entries in the TabUrls table and it comes back with the too many redirects error.

Best Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I have seem the "to many redirects error" when you get to a loop situation because of renaming page1 to page2 and then page2 back to page1.

I think the reason why you are facing this error is because of a looping situation.

To fix that I just clear up the necessary records within the TabURLs table. Actually this is a good tip of the week :)

Cheers,

Aderson

Hi Aderson,

Thank you for your reply.

This happened if I tried editing the page URL more than once. So, for example, it was originally set by DNN to:

Blog/The-Hike/Week-1/Day-1

Then I wanted to change it to make all lower case and remove hyphens, but sometimes I was careless and changed it to:
blog/thehike/week1/Day-1

It works so far, just one edit. But realising my mistake I then make a further edit to change it to:

blog/thehike/week1/day1

Now I get the too many redirects error.

But from the 3 URLs above I can't imagine that it would loop.
I don't have an exact example but it was something like that, I'm sure each URL was unique different.

Great if you can get a 'tip of the week' out of it.
I can try creating a new page and give you the exact details if you need it.

Best Regards,

Steve

Somehow Steve that got you into a loop. If you use Fiddler to find out what's going on you will see the same URL getting a 301 redirect after the other in a loop situation.

I see that all the time when we are trying to fix word case on the URL. I haven't seem described as you did, but I think it is the same issue.

When you see that, just clean up the related entries in the TabURLs - That has been our solution. More on that once I do a full testing for the DNN Tip of the Week.

Hi Aderson,

I'm amazed, I would never have thought of that. Yes, putting Fiddler on it is a good idea, I'll try that next time it happens.

Great to have a solution too. But I think something's wrong somewhere.

Thank you once again for your help.

Steve
