Hello,

Is there a generally accepted minimum configuration for a dedicated server when hosting DNN sites?

I only have a couple of small sites at the moment, so can start small and ramp up.

Somewhere I read that 2Gb, somewhere else 4Gb. Also what about CPU cores?

I realise it's a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but do need to start somewhere.

As a guide to desired, I sort of feel a page should start to load within a few seconds, obviously that also depends very much on the connection speed.

Best Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I recommend you to check this DNN Performance Best Practice Guide from Mitchel Sellers.

That is what I usually refer back to whenever performance questions like that comes up.

Cheers,

Aderson

Hi Aderson,

Thank you for your reply.

I saw that very thorough and excellent paper, which is where I got the 2Gb from, but rereading. I can see that for a single server they recommend 4gb.

But I checked memory usage with my ISP and they tell me my site is consuming just 200Mb.

Best Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Just a thought: Comparing the recommended 4GB with the reported 200MB your ISP has reported may be comparing apples to oranges. The 200MB doesn't not consider the overhead that Windows, IIS and SQL Server impose to a server. 200MB is just the additional toll their existing servers take by hosting your site alone. The infrastructure to have it running should also be considered when running your own server.

My 2 cents.

Cheers,

Aderson

Hi Aderson,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes of course the 200Mb is just the addition. And in this case SQL Server is on a separate server.

I suppose the question is how much would the basic infrastructure consume? And perhaps that's a better way to think about it.

I mean its so much for the basic infrastructure and in addition so much for each site. Though each site will be different of course.

Best Regards,

Steve
